# Basic Information |# Bone Marrow Regeneration

The middle portion of the bone contains a hollow portion surrounded by compact bone called the medullary cavity, inside which is the marrow. In adults, the medullary cavity contains yellow marrow, which is made mostly of fat. Red marrow produces blood cells in both adults and infants, but infants have more red marrow than do adults. In infants, the medullary cavities of most long bones are filled with red marrow; in adults, red marrow is limited to the spongy bone in the ends of long bones as well as the skull, ribs, vertebrae, and breast bone. In adults, a process called hematopoiesis forms red blood cells in spongy bone.
